Global Recycled Standard (GRS)

In a world where environmental concerns are at the forefront of every discussion, the textile industry is one of the largest polluters in the world, contributing to environmental degradation and exploiting workers in the process. As consumers become increasingly aware of these issues, sustainable practices become critically important for stakeholders across the textile manufacturing & supply chain.

One of the key initiatives aimed at driving sustainability in the textile industry is the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) – designed to boost the use of recycled materials. GRS is a comprehensive international standard for products made with recycled material. Its main objective is to establish clear criteria for the certification of recycled materials, ensuring transparency and trust in the supply chain for consumers, developed by the textile exchange that works towards sustainability within the textile industry.

The Global Recycled Standard is designed to apply to any product comprising of a minimum of 20% recycled materials. Certification is mandatory for every stage of production, commencing with the recycling phase and concluding with the ultimate seller in the final business-to-business transaction. Material Collection and Material Concentration sites undergo self-declaration, document collection, and on-site visits for compliance.

Incorporating consumer-facing labelling, the GRS ensures that only products certified up to the seller in the final business-to-business transaction are eligible. Moreover, for products to qualify for product-specific GRS labelling, they must contain a minimum of 50% recycled content. These stringent criteria underscore the GRS’s commitment to transparency and authenticity in promoting recycled materials within the textile industry.

The widespread adoption of the GRS by global fashion brands signifies a shift toward a more environment-friendly and low-waste approach towards manufacturing as well as consumption of textiles. Recognizing the environmental imperative, Tarasafe International Pvt. Ltd. aligns its activities with sustainability goals, contributing meaningfully to a circular economy. In 2023, Tarasafe launched its Taracare product range, which incorporates recycled fiber content and will be listed under the GRS product category. Included in this range are products like CVC blend, Polyester blend, and Soft-shell 350, reflecting Tarasafe’s commitment to eco-conscious manufacturing.

In addition to its commitment to sustainability goals, Tarasafe actively engages in reducing its carbon footprint and minimizing environmental impact throughout its different operations. It also prioritizes ethical labour practices, ensures worker safety, and invests in employee welfare. Additionally, Tarasafe engages in community outreach to promote environmental awareness, contributing to a more sustainable and socially responsible future.
